American billionaire Elon Musk has announced the launch of a new political party, dubbed the "America Party," in a move that has stirred widespread reaction across the US political landscape.
In a post shared on his social media platform X, Musk positioned the new party as a direct challenge to the dominance of the Republican and Democratic parties.
On Friday, Musk conducted a poll on X, asking users whether the United States should have a new political party.
Referencing the results in a follow-up post on Saturday, he wrote: "By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party and you shall have it!"
Criticizing what he described as the entrenched political establishment, Musk added: "When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste and graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy. Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom."
Musk had previously been a close ally of US President Donald Trump, contributing to his 2024 re-election campaign and serving as chair of a federal commission focused on government efficiency and spending reform. However, tensions between the two figures emerged in May, following public disagreements over issues including fiscal transparency and budget management.
At the end of May, Musk announced his resignation from his role as special advisor to President Trump, stepping down after 130 days in the post. His position was part of a broader initiative aimed at reducing federal expenditures and streamlining government operations.
Despite his growing political influence, Musk - who was born in South Africa - is constitutionally ineligible to run for the US presidency, as candidates must be natural-born citizens of the United States.
