In celebration of World Environment Day on June 5, Al Meera Consumer Goods Company will launch a pioneering national recycling initiative among residents, aimed at promoting a culture of sustainability and encouraging environmental practices within the local community.
The initiative is the first-of-its-kind in the country, based on a community challenge among residents through their preferred or nearest Al Meera branches with recycling machines. The winning branch will be determined based on the highest amount of plastic bottles and aluminium cans recycled.
The challenge will run until June 3, 2025, during which the total number of recycled bottles in each branch will be counted. The winning branch will be announced on June 4, 2025, via Al Meera’s social media platforms. Customers of the winning branch will be rewarded by receiving 5x Meera reward points on all their purchases made at this branch on World Environment Day.
This is in support of this year’s global slogan #BeatPlasticPollution, and reflects Al Meera’s commitment to supporting environmental efforts and contributing to building a more sustainable future.
Through the initiative, customers are encouraged to recycle their plastic bottles using Reverse Vending Machines (RVMs) located in the following Al Meera branches in Al Wajba, Al Khor, Wakra South, Muraikh, Nuaija, Aziziah, Al Thumama, Azghawa 2, Rawdat Al Hamama, Al Qutaifiya, Um Salal Ali, Leabaib 1, Rawdat Eqdeem, Jeryan Nejaima, and Al Mansoura.
Centred on the idea ‘Recycle Today. Grow Tomorrow’, the campaign symbolises how small daily actions can lead to long-term environmental growth. This complements Al Meera’s increasing investments in environmental sustainability, which include deploying recycling machines, and encouraging customers to use reusable shopping bags instead of single-use plastic bags, paper and cardboard recycling across all branches, in addition to launching award-winning awareness initiatives such as the “Truth Bottle” campaign.
These programs aim to drive behaviour change, reduce waste, and inspire more conscious consumer habits, aligning with Qatar National Vision 2030 and the country’s national strategies for plastic waste reduction.
Al Meera commented: “At Al Meera, we believe that change begins with simple steps, and that every individual can make a difference. Through this initiative, we aim to empower our customers to adopt eco-friendly behaviours and to establish a culture of sustainability in their daily lives, as it is one of our most important corporate responsibilities. As a leading national company in the retail sector, we strive to make shopping moments and our customers’ daily visits opportunities to raise awareness about ways to protect the environment and preserve its resources. This campaign goes beyond the realm of competition; it is a clear call for our communities to take the initiative, lead positive change, and build a safer environmental future.”
With thousands of customers visiting its branches every day, Al Meera is uniquely positioned to turn everyday actions into nationwide impact. From now until June 3, the role of Al Meera’s branches will expand to facilitate consumers in making an impact on the environment.
Through collective efforts, different segments of society can reduce plastic waste, support sustainable practices, and contribute to building a more sustainable Qatar. This World Environment Day, Al Meera invites every household in Qatar to help shape a cleaner tomorrow, one recycled bottle at a time.
