Malaysian Prime Minister Dr Anwar Ibrahim has emphasised that the visit of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani to Malaysia, to participate in the 2nd Asean-GCC Summit and the 1st Asean-GCC-China Economic Summit, is a high-level occasion that reflects the deep bilateral relations.

He praised His Highness personally and his esteemed position in the Islamic world, appreciating Qatar’s firm stances on issues concerning the Muslim community and its active role in achieving global peace.

In an interview with Qatar News Agency (QNA) on the sidelines of the Amir's visit to Malaysia, the Malaysian prime minister said that it is a rare privilege to receive His Highness the Amir, adding that he is looking forward to enhancing the bilateral collaboration and economic investments.

He said that the relations between Malaysia and Qatar are friendly and successful, noting that Malaysians consider Qatar a great friend of their country.

Regarding regional issues, the Malaysian prime minister highlighted the great esteem Qatar enjoys within the Islamic world, stating that what is of particular importance is the position taken by Qatar and His Highness the Amir on issues affecting the Ummah, particularly the Palestinian cause, and the tireless and continuous efforts to achieve peace, ceasefire in Gaza, and recognition of the State of Palestine. This position has been greatly appreciated by many Muslims, including Malaysians, he affirmed.

He also praised Qatar’s successes in hosting global events, pointing to Qatar’s outstanding success in organising the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, which received admiration from the entire world.

In a separate context, Dr Ibrahim praised Qatar's role in mediating a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, pointing out that Qatar continues to engage with all parties to end the war in Gaza, in co-operation with the US and Egypt.

He added that Qatar, without exaggeration, has played a pivotal role in a very difficult time and has had to take a tough diplomatic path, noting that without the involvement of the Palestinians and their representatives, no meaningful progress in negotiations can be achieved.

The Malaysian prime minister reaffirmed his support for Qatar’s peace efforts, condemning the atrocities committed against innocent civilians, and rejecting the principle of occupation, adding, "I told His Highness the Amir that we really appreciate his immense contribution to try and resolve this conflict."
