The Katara International Ramadan Open Classic Chess Championship will continue on Tuesday at the Katara Cultural Village.
This hugely popular international chess tournament, drawing 90 players from 22 nations, culminates on March 15. Employing a 9-round Swiss system, the classic competitions adhere to a 60-minute plus 30-second increment per move format.
On Tuesday at 9pm, the sixth round will be held, promising clashes among the top contenders. Among those competing at this event include Syed Abdul Khader of India, compatriot Balanandan Ayyappan, Loyola Rolenson Jr (Philippines) and compatriot Ryan Mendoza.
Top Qatari players include Layan al-Qassabi, Erfan Mohamad Firdaus and Khaled Aljamaat.
Hamad al-Tamimi, Executive Director of the Qatar Chess Association (QCA), told Qatar News Agency fans are enjoying thrilling battles among the leading six players.
He commended the performance of the Qatari national team members in the initial five rounds, reaffirming the Federation’s dedication to working their development and maximising their achievements.
Al-Tamimi specifically acknowledged the crucial support provided by Katara Cultural Village. He stressed that this support is vital for the growth of chess in Qatar, and enhances the experience of the players.
