The Primary Health Care Corporation (PHCC) marked World Obesity Day by launching an awareness campaign on obesity risks.
Community medicine specialist Dr Sarah Rashid Musa, the head of the Wellness Centre at Rawdat Al Khail Health Centre, stated: “World Obesity Day has been observed globally on March 4 since 2020 to raise awareness about obesity and its associated risks, including diabetes, heart disease, and joint problems.”
“This year’s theme, *Changing System, Healthier Lives, highlights that obesity is a complex issue requiring a multifaceted approach rather than just individual efforts,” she said.
Dr Musa emphasised the need for collaborative changes across various levels, including healthcare systems, food environments, and public policies.
World Obesity Day calls for adopting healthier lifestyles, implementing policy reforms, and introducing preventive and medical interventions.
As part of the celebration, the Wellness Centre at Rawdat Al Khail Health Centre organised an event aimed at raising awareness about obesity risk factors, complications, and preventative measures.
The campaign featured an awareness booth where brochures were distributed on healthy lifestyles, physical activity, and dietary guidelines during Ramadan.
The event included health screenings conducted in multiple stages.
It began with an assessment of vital signs such as blood pressure and pulse rate, followed by calculating the Body Mass Index (BMI), which estimates body fat based on height and weight.
Waist circumference was then measured, and the screening concluded with a blood sugar test.
Dr Musa said that the health screening is structured in phases to ensure participants received consultations with a doctor or health educator.
During these consultations, participants are provided with a summary of their measurements, indicating whether they were within normal or abnormal ranges.
In addition, discussions are encouraged regarding the implications and necessary follow-up actions.
Personalised recommendations are also given based on individual goals, measurements, and lifestyle factors, including physical activity, nutrition, sleep, mental health, smoking, hydration, and weight management.
