Syria has welcomed the European Union's decision to suspend certain sanctions on the country, calling it a step toward alleviating the suffering of the Syrian people.
Syria's Ministry of Foreign Affairs state in a press release that the decision represents a positive development and indicates progress towards constructive engagement between Syria and the international community.
The Ministry also called on all international partners to take further action to lift the remaining sanctions that continue to hinder Syria's recovery.
Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Al Shaibani, in a post on social media platform X, stated that the Syrian government had engaged in diplomatic discussions over the past two months to push for easing the sanctions.
"We welcome the European Union's decision to suspend some sanctions on specific sectors and view this as a step toward easing our people's hardship," he wrote.
Meeting in Brussels on Monday, EU foreign ministers agreed to suspend a range of sanctions against Syria, including restrictions related to energy, banking, transport and reconstruction.
They have also lifted asset freezes for five banks, eased restrictions on the Syrian central bank and indefinitely extended an exemption to facilitate delivery of humanitarian aid.
