The Ministry of Endowments (Awqaf) and Islamic Affairs is set to rebuild the Al Shafi Mosque in Al Rayyan, with a capacity to accommodate 2,000 worshippers on two floors.
Local Arabic daily Arrayah reported that Awqaf has completed the demolition of the existing mosque which could accommodate 600 worshippers.
Al Shafi Mosque is considered one of the largest and oldest mosques in the region. “It was built about 40 years ago and became dilapidated over time. It is in dire need of reconstruction to be on the same level as the rest of the mosques in the country that were built by Awqaf,” Central Municipal Council member Mohammed Hamoud al-Shafi told Arrayah.
He explained that after the mosque is rebuilt, it will serve worshippers in many surrounding areas whether in the Al Rayyan area or other neighbouring areas.
The design of the mosque, according to the report, will be distinctive, similar to the designs that Awqaf follows in the rest of the mosques in the country.
