Al Gamamah, in the silks of Saeed Ibrahim Saeed al-Malki, won the Al Mamoura Cup at the Qatar Equestrian and Racing Club’s (QREC) Al Rayyan Racecourse.
The six-year-old mare made a late sprint to beat Al Shomos by one-and-a-half-length in the class 2 Local Thoroughbred Handicap for four-year-olds and older rated 60-80, securing a double for trainer Ibrahim Saeed al-Malki and jockey Marco Casamento. Dhergham Bu Thaila finished third in the 1200m race.
Casamento also rode the Mansoor Ebrahim al-Mahmoud-owned and Gassim Ghazali-trained Elliptical to victory in the 1700m race for the Thoroughbred Handicap (60-80) for three-year-olds.
In the penultimate contest of the evening, Jefferson Smith guided Sheikh Ahmad bin Mohamed al-Thani-owned and Mohamed Salama Ashour-trained Malikah to victory in the Purebred Arabian Handicap (75-95) for the four-year-old+. Hadjira De Flauzins, schooled by Julian Colin Smart, finished one length behind the winner in the 1700m race.
Ahmed Hassan al-Malki al-Jehani’s Billabong reigned supreme in the Thoroughbred Handicap (0-80) winning the contest by an impressive three lengths for trainer Hamad al-Jehani. Also on Thursday, al-Malki-trained Achika, ridden by Mohamed Hassan Ali Alab-dulmalik, overcame a tough challenge from Moharb to win the Local Thoroughbred Handicap (40-60) by one-and-a-half-length.
In the meet opener Rashid al-Jehani-trained Al Jasrah claimed the Purebred Arabian Maiden Plate title under the guidance of jockey Tomas Lukasek, followed by a win for Matwi al-Shajah, which had Saleh Faraj al-Otaibi in the saddle.
