The United Nations (UN) warned that the number of people infected with cholera and acute diarrhea in Somalia has increased significantly since the beginning of 2024 compared to previous years, reaching about 4,400, of whom 54 people have died.
"The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) is concerned about the spread of cholera and acute diarrhea in the country. Indeed, since the beginning of 2024, nearly 4,400 infections and 54 deaths have been recorded in almost half of Somalias regions, more than 60% of the deceased are children under the age of five", Spokesman for the United Nations Secretary-General Stephane Dujarric said.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), this number is three times the average of the previous three years, Dujarric added.
