Qatar Cancer Society (QCS) chairman HE Sheikh Dr Khalid bin Jabr al-Thani has disclosed that the society covered the treatment cost of 1,360 cancer patients in 2023, with an approximate amount QR12,725,000 for adult patients at National Centre for Cancer Care and Research or children at Sidra Medicine.
In addition to the financial support programmes, there are also sustainable programmes for psychological support for this group and their families, including “Our Children are Gold”, “Your smile is our life”, “I am a survivor. I will inspire you with my story”, “Together We Can”, “Support Groups”, and “Community Participation”.
These programmes support, empower, and advocate for this group and reactivate their role in society.
Regarding the latest cancer statistics in Qatar, HE Sheikh Dr Khalid said: “A report, issued by the Qatar National Cancer Registry at the Ministry of Public Health, revealed that 2,525 new cases of cancer were recorded in 2019, with breast cancer, colorectal cancer, thyroid cancer, prostate cancer, and leukaemia the five most prevalent cancers among both sexes.”
The report, he said, “indicated that one in five people in Qatar is expected to develop cancer before reaching the age of 75”.
Observance of World Cancer Day on February 4, led by the Union for International Cancer Control, is aimed at mobilising urgent action to improve cancer risk awareness and prevention, treatment, and care services for all individuals.
