The League of Arab States on Friday welcomed the ruling issued by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) regarding Israel committing genocide in the Gaza Strip, stressing the need to fully and immediately implement the measures included in this ruling.
The Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, said in a statement that the court's interim ruling represents a victory for human values and a resolution of the controversy over the blatant violation of international law and international humanitarian law that the Gaza war represents. It also opens the way for intensive diplomatic and legal action at the Arab and global levels, in order to stop the barbaric Israeli war on the Gaza Strip, he added.
Abul Gheit said that the provisional measures imposed by the court on Israel with the aim of preventing genocide in Gaza represent strict obligations on the occupying power, and also put a commitment on the part of the international community to work effectively to achieve an immediate ceasefire and put an end to the daily crimes committed by the occupation forces in Gaza. He pointed out that it was hoped that the court ruling would lead to a complete and immediate cessation of the war.
The Secretary-General of the Arab League expressed his appreciation for the efforts of South Africa and its team of lawyers in the court sessions, noting that the ruling reflects the court's conviction in the arguments that were presented, and the lack of conviction in the weak Israeli positions, which involved a tremendous amount of deception.
