The UN expert on human rights in Sudan, Radhouane Nouicer, called on the parties to the conflict in Yemen to cease violence immediately.
In a press statement, Nouicer noted that the Sudan had suffered for decades from political unrest, impunity, lack of judicial authorities and violations of rights, and called on the international community to agree on mechanisms for resolving the Sudanese crisis.
The UN expert cautioned that most of the violations committed in the Sudan could legally amount to war crimes or crimes against humanity, pointing out that there was almost total destruction of infrastructure in some areas, including schools, hospitals, houses of worship and even humanitarian warehouses.
Impunity was and continues to be a major cause of the violations to which the people of the Sudan were subjected. In the absence of a political solution and the continuation of military actions, the situation in the Sudan could not be resolved. Political discussions and negotiations must be held with the involvement of all parties concerned, particularly the community.
Nouicer was appointed late in 2022 by the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) at the request of the Human Rights Council to document and report on violations committed in the Sudan since October 25, 2021. His mandate was strengthened during a special session of the Human Rights Council to include violations directly resulting from the current conflict.
Fighting has erupted between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces since mid-April. The fighting left more than 12 thousand people dead and more than 7 million displaced and refugees, according to the United Nations.
