The 6.2-magnitude earthquake that jolted Jishishan County in northwest China's Gansu Province late Monday evening has killed 100 people and hundreds more were injured in the province, according to the provincial earthquake relief headquarters.
The quake also has caused 11 deaths and hundreds of injuries in the neighboring Qinghai Province's city of Haidong, local authorities said, according to China's Xinhua News Agency.
The epicenter was located just 5 km from the border between the two provinces. Many areas in Qinghai have felt strong tremors.
Chinese President Xi Jinping has urged all-out search and rescue efforts and proper arrangements for affected people to ensure the safety of people's lives and property.
China usually experiences strong earthquakes tremors, especially in the mountainous areas west of the country.
