Liwan Design Studios and Labs has invited the public to attend the last Open Day of the year, on December 3 from 6pm to 9pm. The event is described as an ideal opportunity for creatives across Qatar to engage in networking and explore some of the innovative design projects and exhibitions.
On view during the event will be a sneaker exhibition, For the Culture, curated by Soleqtr that takes visitors on a journey through the roots of sneaker culture since the 1980s, showcasing unique and mainstream collaborations, customisation, and a section dedicated to collections and collectors.
The selection on display will be sourced from local collectors in Qatar. There will also be a marketplace from noted resellers in Qatar with limited edition sneakers available for purchase.
Attendees can also explore the accompanying exhibition to Al Mafyar's Open Call for reimagining and staging design interventions in a historic fishing village in the north of Qatar. The exhibit will feature works from Liwan residents and the broader creative community in the country. The project outcomes are a collaborative effort of more than ten artists and designers in Qatar.
Also on display at the Open Day will be two new commissions from Qatar Museums' Public Art Student Initiative, an annual drive supporting Public Art projects by students in Qatar. The artworks, Soon It Will Rain by Ibrahim Al Kilani and Untitled by Doaa Mohammed, negotiate the built environment of the school and the playfulness of Liwan to provide commentary on spatial experience, joy and altered perceptions.
In a press statement, Liwan director Aisha bint Nasser al-Sowaidi said: “We have had such success with past open days, where we have gathered hundreds of creatives across Qatar and beyond for an evening of networking, exhibitions, fun and much more, and we look forward to expanding our community and meeting new people.”
