Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO) Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza Strip is no longer operating as a medical facility; noting that WHO has managed to get in touch with health professionals at the hospital.
"Regrettably, the hospital is not functioning as a hospital anymore," Tedros wrote on X.
"The situation is dire and perilous. It's been 3 days without electricity, without water and with very poor internet which has severely impacted our ability to provide essential care," he added.
"The constant gunfire and bombings in the area have exacerbated the already critical circumstances. Tragically, the number of patient fatalities has increased significantly," Tedros noted.
"The world cannot stand silent while hospitals, which should be safe havens, are transformed into scenes of death, devastation, and despair," he stressed.
On Saturday, WHO said it has lost communication with its contacts in Al-Shifa Hospital in northern Gaza.
"As horrifying reports of the hospital facing repeated attacks continue to emerge, we assume our contacts joined tens of thousands of displaced people who had sought shelter on the hospital grounds and are fleeing the area," WHO said.
Israeli warplanes have continued bombardment of the vicinity of Al-Shifa Hospital, west of Gaza City, and the targeting of anyone moving in its surroundings.
Palestinian news agency (WAFA) quoted local sources as saying that the occupation forces were targeting by missiles and live fire anyone moving in the vicinity of Al-Shifa Hospital which is sheltering thousands of displaced in addition to the injured, patients and medical staff.
