A man from the US state of Illinois stabbed a 6-year-old Muslim boy 26 times, killing him and seriously injuring his mother, US police said.
The man spewed anti-Muslim and anti-Palestinian words.
The police charged the 71-year-old man with committing a hate crime against the child and his 32-year-old mother, saying that the victims were targeted due to their Islamic faith and as a response to the ongoing war that Israel is waging against the Palestinians.
"Detectives were able to determine that both victims in this brutal attack were targeted by the suspect due to them being Muslim and the ongoing Middle Eastern conflict involving Hamas and the Israelis," the Will County Sheriff's Office said in news release.
Officers found the victims on Saturday morning in a house in the town of Plainfield, approximately 65 km southwest of Chicago.
The boy was transported to the hospital in critical condition, and later he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased by a doctor.
The 32-year-old female was transported in serious condition and had over a dozen stab wounds to her body. The female victim is recovering from her injuries at a local area hospital and is expected to survive this brutal attack, the Sheriff's Office said.
When police personnel arrived on scene they located the suspect, sitting upright outside on the ground near the driveway of the residence. He had a laceration to his forehead.
The suspect charged with First Degree Murder, Attempted First Degree Murder, Hate Crime, and Aggravated Battery with a Deadly Weapon.
The authorities did not release the names of the deceased, but the Chicago office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Chicago) planned to hold a press conference with a family member and identified the victims as Wadea Al-Fayoume, a Palestinian-American 6-year-old, and his mother Hanaan Shahin.
The mother and her son had lived on the ground floor of the house for two years with no previous notable issues with the landlord, according to CAIR-Chicago which said that the man was the landlord.
According to written text messages reportedly sent to the father of the boy by the mother from the hospital and shared with CAIR-Chicago, before the stabbing, the man the was yelling "you Muslims must die!"
The Muslim civil liberties organization called the crime "our worst nightmare" and part of a disturbing spike in hate calls and emails since the outbreak of the violence in the Middle East.
