Msheireb Museums hosted the first-ever Local Conference of Youth (LCOY) organised by the Arab Youth Climate Movement Qatar (AYCMQ) in partnership with the US embassy in Doha and Generation Amazing.
LCOY Qatar 2023 is the first-ever event of its kind to be hosted in Qatar and is part of the official children and youth constituency of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. The two-day event was designed by youth, for youth to help inspire the next generation of young people to make their voices heard when it comes to climate action. Speakers and attendees included US ambassador Timmy Davis and Generation Amazing executive director Nasser al-Khori.
“Msheireb Museums aims to bridge the gap between cultural heritage and a sustainable future and is itself a thriving example of smart conservation. The conference emphasises the crucial link between cultural heritage and sustainable development, and by hosting LCOY Qatar, we seek to contribute to a holistic understanding of Qatar's history and its role in shaping a sustainable world for our future,” said Abdulla al-Naama, manager of Msheireb Museums.
The event featured sessions and workshops organised by youth, exploring the impacts of climate change and highlighting solutions to meet the commitments of the Paris Agreement. The conference aligns with Qatar National Vision 2030 and the National Climate Change Action Plan, positioning youth as leaders in driving transformative change.
“Confronting the climate crisis requires unprecedented global co-operation, with a shared sense of urgency and imagination. The coming decades will be decisive. Qatar’s youth have a critical opportunity today to shape tomorrow for the world. That is why the US embassy Doha is a long-term partner of the Arab Youth Climate Movement Qatar and we support Qatar’s Local Conference of Youth this week,” said ambassador Davis.
“Through this conference, we grew support for Qatar’s efforts in tackling the many issues linked to climate change. We provided a platform for the many passionate individuals in the sustainability sector in Qatar to share their experiences, challenges, and successes and promoted their work. We continue to strive to nurture an educated, collaborative, and action-driven community in Qatar that works effectively to address this global concern,” added, Hessa al-Noaimi, co-founder of AYCM.
