Amro al-Hamad, the Executive Director of Qatar Motor and Motorcycle Federation (QMMF) and CEO of Lusail Circuit, has been one of officials tirelessly working towards the remodelling of the newly renovated Lusail International Circuit and the staging of the country’s second Formula One Grand Prix – Qatar Airways Qatar Grand Prix. Ahead of this weekend’s Grand Prix, al-Hamad spoke about what has gone into the modernisation and overhaul of the Lusail International Circuit and Qatar being premier motorsport destination in the region. Excerpts from an interview
Q: Can you explain how the redesigned Lusail International Circuit will be different from other circuits in the world?
Lusail International Circuit (LIC) is a premier motorsport track with a 5.38km 16-corner circuit. It was opened in the autumn of 2004, and has been awarded the highest license levels from the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) (Circuit License Grade 1) and Circuit License Grade A (FIM).
In the past year, the circuit has undergone an elaborate renovation project, resulting in the introduction of Lusail Hill which is a dedicated elevated viewing area at the end of Turn 1 aiming to provide more viewing options and deliver a seamless racing experience for spectators. This new addition is a step towards fulfilling our goal at LIC: to provide motorsports fans with the best views where they can conveniently watch all the action up close and at an affordable price.
We are also committed to providing the highest level of accessibility for all racegoers; this means that the circuit will have various accessible services available to meet everyone’s needs to ensure a smooth and enjoyable race experience. Additionally, visitors with accessibility needs will benefit from the enhanced infrastructure across the country including the accessible public transport system.
We want to make a visit to LIC an experience that is not to be missed. The thrilling speed track is a spectacle on its own with flowing turns, challenging overtaking opportunities, and night races. We have also been planning various exciting activities for everyone to enjoy beyond the track.
Q: We know the track layout has not changed but have you made any minor enhancements, and will it be as fast and flowing track as it has been before in previous races?
After receiving positive feedback from both MotoGP riders and Formula 1 drivers, the track layout has been retained. However, the surface of track has been improved with fresh asphalt to provide best possible racing experience.
Q: Can you shed more light on the circuit’s completely new pits and paddock complex as well as added tunnels?
The circuit’s new pits, paddock complex, along with added tunnels, are game changers for both international teams and spectators. Even though the iconic circuit layout remains unchanged, these upgrades aim to provide a superior experience for racegoers while meeting Formula 1 standards. Key improvements in the circuit facilities include larger garages for teams which are ideal for accommodating all F1 needs, five-star VIP areas for a premium race day, and a more extensive Fan Zone, cultivating a vibrant atmosphere throughout the race weekend. The permanent grandstand now has a bigger capacity, allowing more fans to enjoy the action.
The upgrades also include expanded seating and parking capacity, and we have integrated advanced technologies while ensuring LIC adheres to FIA and FIM technical standards. It is important to note that the pit stops, and maintenance areas now feature 50 pit boxes, setting a new standard in Formula 1 circuits. Altogether, these changes have made LIC a world-class, state-of-the-art venue and it stands as a testament to our commitment to improvement as we are dedicated to delivering a top-tier racing experience for all.
Q: What role can Qatar play as a premier motorsport destination in the region?
Qatar has a legacy of hosting top-tier motorsport events like the Formula 1, MotoGP, and WEC championships. They play a vital role in the region as it showcases how Qatar is a global sporting destination in the Middle East. These events are also catalysts for boosting economic growth, stimulating tourism, and generating significant societal benefits for our communities.
These events leave a lasting impact in the form of improved infrastructure and facilities while also promoting a sporting culture within the country that inspires the youth and encourages participation in motorsports. These endeavours seamlessly align with the goals of the Qatar National Vision 2030.
Furthermore, we are building on Qatar’s successful track record in delivering world-class sporting events, following the successful FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 This feat highlighted the unifying power of sports in bringing people together, building understanding and respect across cultures. This commitment is supported by initiatives like the Qatar Motorsports Academy, managed by LIC, which enhances educational opportunities and empowers future leaders in motorsport.
Q: Your passion for motorsport is second to none. How fulfilling is this role as QMMF executive director and Lusail Circuit CEO?
I always joke with people that I do not get a job anywhere. But on a serious note, I feel lucky that I get to do something that I am passionate about and something I love. I am in my natural habitat, and my job is dear to my heart.
Q: How excited are you for the world to see the renovated Lusail International Circuit?
I look forward to the spectators and teams witnessing our new state-of-the-art circuit. The spectators and the fans will have a chance to experience the new Lusail Circuit during the F1 race. I look forward to seeing local and international motorsports fans gathering in Qatar, enjoying our facilities, and having a fantastic racing experience for the 2023 race, and over the next ten years.
