The United Nations annually celebrates International Translation Day, which falls on September 30 of each year.

Qatar University (QU) marked this occasion to enhance the status of the translation profession, celebrate academics and language specialists, and to highlight their pivotal role in bringing countries of the world closer together and in facilitating the process of understanding and dialogue, local Arabic daily Arrayyah reported.

Dr Ahmed al-Abbasi, acting head of the Translation Department at Qatar University, said: “Qatar, represented by its cultural and educational institutions, attaches great importance to translation and translators, launching initiatives and programmes that support the translation and Arabisation movement.”

Dr Noura al-Kaabi, assistant professor of Translation Studies, said: “Translation bridges the concepts of cultural communication that advances human civilisation.” Dr Sarah al-Muhannadi, assistant professor of Translation, Department of English Literature and Linguistics – referred to the Sheikh Hamad Award for Translation and International Understanding, and explained that this award plays a crucial role in promoting translation activity in many countries.
