A military helicopter (v-22 Osprey) carrying around 20 US Marines has crashed during an exercise off the coast of Darwin, northern Australia.
An emergency services incident map for the Northern Territory said there had been an "aircraft crash" on Melville Island, located some 60 kilometres (37 miles) north of the Australian mainland in the eastern Timor Sea. Several members onboard were injured rescued.
The Australian Defence Force (ADF) has confirmed that there were no Australians on board the helicopter when it went down.
"Initial reports suggest the incident involves United States defence personnel and that the Australian Defence Force members were not involved," the ADF said in a statement.
There are roughly 2500 people involved in these exercises, from the United States, the Philippines, Indonesia and Timor Leste.
