Google is partnering with American Airlines and the Climate Investment Fund for Bill Gates and Breakthrough Energy to chart more sustainable flight paths. The aim is to assist pilots in reducing the climate impact of flights by avoiding routes that create white lines in the sky, left by airplanes at times.
These white lines are a significant problem for the planet, as they trap heat and account for about 35 percent of the aviation industry's greenhouse gas effect. Utilizing satellite imagery and artificial intelligence, Google has developed a method to predict where these white lines are likely to form.
This could provide pilots with the opportunity to avoid them and reduce the environmental footprint of flights in the process.
