As part of its interventions to develop the water and environmental sanitation sector in Gaza, Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) has constructed a water well for the Deir Al-Balah municipality and installed a solar power system at three water wells for the Beit Hanoun municipality to improve water supply services for the target population.
Dr Akram Nassar, head of QRCS’s representation office in Gaza, said the project of constructing a water well in Deir Al-Balah and providing three water wells in Beit Hanoun with solar power would help ease the water supply crisis in Gaza and support the municipalities to enhance their services.
“The QR 1.7mn project involved the installation of 215 solar panels for three wells in Beit Hanoun, northern Gaza, to reduce the recurrent power outages, which last for over 12 hours per day. About 30,000 people benefit from this intervention,” Dr Nassar explained.
Radwan Karim, director of Water Services at the Deir Al-Balah Municipality, southern Gaza, stated, “The construction of the new well, with support from QRCS, will improve the severely inadequate domestic water supply. The water well is expected to serve 10,000 people, by providing 15,000 cubic metres of water to homes”.
QRCS has already implemented many renewable energy projects, to ensure the continuity of services provided in the 17-year blockade. These projects served health centres, local universities, and homes of many poor families across Gaza.
