For the fifth year, Qatar Charity continues to implement the wheat value chain support project, which is a pioneering project in its field and the first of its kind in northern Syria, given its comprehensiveness in supporting the value chain, starting with the provision of agricultural inputs, and ending with the provision of bread for the local community, through marketing.
Free bread
The project works on producing and distributing free bread to the displaced in the camps. It is expected to last for 12 months. Its implementation began on April 1, 2023, in both the regions of Al-Rai and Afrin. The budget allocated for the project amounted to QR3mn , and about 100,000 people will benefit from it.
The project includes supporting the infrastructure of the wheat value chain by providing a bread production line with a capacity of 5,000 bread bundle per hour to meet the needs of the people in the region. The project also works to support local wheat production by providing support to 100 wheat farms in the region.
The wheat purchased from the project is milled to extract the necessary flour to produce free and subsidised bread. The milling process takes place in the Al-Rai mill, which was previously built as part of the wheat value chain projects. Later, the bread is distributed to poor and displaced families in the camps in Afrin and Al-Rai.
Economic stability
In this context, Ahmed al-Ali, Director of the Directorate of Agriculture in the city of Al-Rai, said the project implemented by Qatar Charity in the region is a very good and important project for the region, as it contributes to supporting farmers to increase their yields from the wheat crop, by saving harvest costs, and helping them market wheat.
The farmers expressed their gratitude for this generous support from the Qatari people, which left them with a positive impact on increasing the cultivated areas, and thus increasing the produced .
