Doha College yesterday announced that the Council of British International School (COBIS) recognised three of its students by presenting them with the 'Student Achievement Award.' These awards recognise outstanding individual achievements or contributions to an aspect of school or community life, a statement said.
Shiven Vaja, in Year 6 at Doha College's Primary school, received the COBIS award for 'Significant contribution to the wider community.' Shiven was among the few students selected by Qatar's Ministry of Communications and Information Technology to attend the UN Convention on Least Developed Countries at the Qatar National Convention Centre.
Shiven was asked to participate due to his passion for developing Artificial Intelligence (AI) and how this could support and drive the UN's sustainability goals as part of initiatives in Qatar. Through discussions with those at the event, Shiven plans to develop further how AI can benefit people's lives by hosting workshops and classes.
Karan Murthi, Year 11, received the COBIS award for 'Commitment to a charitable cause.' Karan has shown an outstanding commitment to helping others. He has led a book club for a group of children in India during the summer, showcasing his dedication to education and empowering others to help children read. He works in rural areas of poorer states to impact change in areas with the most significant need alongside NGO Healing Fields, focusing on improving health. He has also worked with Afghan refugee children hosted in Qatar through Generation Amazing, using football to promote underlying principles of gender equality, communication, leadership, teamwork and inclusivity through its programmes.
Elizabeth Dodds, also in Year 11, received the COBIS award for 'Resilience in the face of adversity.' She has shown exceptional resilience in the face of adversity. Despite being diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy, Elizabeth's determination and perseverance have been an inspiration to everyone around her. She has excelled academically and has become an incredible role model for her peers. Elizabeth's contribution to Doha College's Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Programme has been outstanding. She has been a tireless advocate for disability rights and has actively educated others about disabilities, creating a significant impact within the school community and beyond.
Martin George, principal of Doha College, expressed his pride and admiration for these outstanding students, saying: "Shiven, Karan, and Elizabeth exemplify the values we strive to instill in our students at Doha College. Their achievements are a testament to their dedication, passion, and resilience. We are incredibly proud of them and are confident that they will continue to make a positive impact in the world."
COBIS represents over 500 British international schools in more than 80 countries worldwide. Through its affiliation with COBIS, Doha College ensures the highest standards of education, governance, and student welfare, fostering a global network of schools committed to excellence in education.
