Delegations of Qatar athletes and special athletes will be participating in the 15th Arab Games to be hosted in Algiers from July 5 to 15.
As many as 115 athletes (both men and women) representing 12 local federations: handball, volleyball, basketball, swimming, cycling and triathlon (bikes only), athletics, gymnastics, chess, fencing, sailing and rowing (sail), boxing and wrestling (boxing only), people with special needs (athletics for people of determination - goal ball), taekwondo, judo, karate (karate - judo), table tennis, tennis, squash and badminton (badminton only) will be vying for top honours in Algeria.
In the previous edition in Algeria, Qatari athletes won 25 medals, including three gold medals, the same number of silver and 19 bronze medals.
Qatar has been participating in the regional Arab Games since the sixth edition in 1985 that was held in Morocco. The 12th edition of Arab Games hosted by Doha saw Qatar achieve fourth place with a total of 110 medals, including 32 gold medals.
Head of the national team delegation for people with special needs and a member of the board of directors of the Qatar Sports Federation Mohamed al-Dosari said: “I thank Algeria for the warm reception and good organization, and our participation in this Arab gathering is for the success of this sports event, and we are here for the competition.”
He added: “Our ambitions are great at these Games, especially that our Olympic champion Abdulrahman Abdul Qadir will participate in the shot put competition and we hope that he will achieve a podium finish, as well as the football team, the West Asian champion, God willing, will be in contention for a medal finish.”
