Dahlan Jumaan al-Hamad announced his candidacy for a third term as President of the Asian Athletics Association (AAA), which extends until 2027, in order to continue achievements for Asian athletics at the Olympic and international levels and present new champions for the future. Al-Hamad said in a statement to Qatar News Agency (QNA) that the AAA has set July 9 as the date for holding the meeting of the Board of Directors in Bangkok. He added that the meeting of the board of directors will be the last one in the session that began in 2019 and ends on July 10, the date set for electing a new board of directors for the association.
The AAA is to hold the meeting of the General Assembly in conjunction with the passage of 50 years since its founding. It is scheduled to witness the election of eight members from 19 members nominated for the Board of Directors. The General Assembly had approved three seats for women by acclamation.
Having been initially elected in 2013, al-Hamad succeeded in achieving a lot for Asia at the Olympic and international levels as well as discovering talents, spreading the culture of the game, and establishing centres for developing administrative and technical capabilities for all athletes of the Asian continent, among others. Al-Hamad applied strict standards for more development, which led to the emergence of more than 20 Olympic champions in the Asian continent in the past 10 years in which he assumed the presidency of the association.
