The 2023 Club World Cup will take place in Saudi Arabian city of Jeddah, soccer’s world governing body FIFA said on Monday.
The decision was made following a FIFA delegation visit to Jeddah last week to assess ongoing preparations for the tournament.
“We are delighted that Jeddah, with its state-of-the-art facilities and reputation for hosting major international sports events, has been selected as host city for the FIFA Club World Cup,” President of SAFF Yasser al-Misehal said.
The tournament, which will be played from Dec 12-22, will be held in Saudi Arabia for the first time, as previously announced in February.
The 2023 edition of the Club World Cup will be the last of current format - an annual competition with seven teams - which will be discontinued before its expansion to a 32-team event to first be held in 2025 in the United States. Former Scotland boss Brown dies aged 82
Former Scotland manager Craig Brown has died at the age of 82, one of his former clubs Aberdeen confirmed yesterday.
Brown was his nation’s longest-serving manager, taking charge of 71 games from 1993 to 2001, during which time he secured qualification for Euro 96 and the 1998 World Cup. He was also part of the Scotland coaching staff for the 1986 and 1990 World Cup finals.
Brown went onto manage Preston North End and Motherwell before ending his career at Aberdeen in 2013 and becoming a director at Pittodrie.
“Everyone at Aberdeen FC is heartbroken by the loss of our beloved former manager, director and club ambassador, Craig Brown,” Aberdeen said in a statement.
“A dear friend to us all, Craig will be sorely missed and our love and condolences are with his family at this terribly sad time.”
Brown began his football career as a player with Rangers, Dundee and Falkirk before moving into management at Clyde. His international coaching career began with Scotland’s youth teams.
He guided the under-16s to a World Cup final in 1989 and under-21s to a European Championship semi-final three years later.
Mendy faces retrialFrench footballer Benjamin Mendy returned to a UK courtroom yesterday to face a retrial for two alleged sexual offences, five months after a jury cleared him of multiple other counts.
Manchester City player Mendy, 28, was photographed arriving and leaving Chester Crown Court in northwest England as he prepared to re-enter the dock charged with one count of rape and one of attempted rape.
Proceedings in his retrial are expected to begin today once a new jury has been selected.
Jurors in his last trial, which ended in January, failed to reach verdicts on the two charges involving two different women.
The panel of seven men and four women had cleared the defender of six other counts of rape and one of sexual assault against four women following a six-month trial.
The judge in January had immediately set a new trial date of Monday for the two counts on which the jury did not return a verdict.
