Qatar has stressed the importance of continuing co-operation and dialogue with all Afghan parties in order to promote and protect human rights.
This came in a statement delivered by HE Permanent Representative of Qatar to the UN Office in Geneva Dr Hind Abdulrahman al-Muftah during Enhanced Interactive Dialogue on the human rights situation of women and girls in Afghanistan, "The report of the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Afghanistan and the Working Group on discrimination against women and girls", within the framework of the 53rd session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva.
Al-Muftah pointed to the exacerbation of the humanitarian and development challenges and the deterioration in human rights conditions suffered by the Afghan people due to the protracted conflicts as a result of the security, political, economic and financial crises through which Afghanistan is going, and called on the international community to redouble efforts to support the Afghan people and enable them to face all challenges and to preserve the gains that have been made.
She added that Qatar had expressed deep concern about the suspension of education for girls in high schools and the prevention of Afghan women from working in non-governmental organisations and international organisations operating in Afghanistan, and it had warned of the serious impact of these practices on human rights and development. Qatar had also called on the caretaker government to reconsider its decisions, and stressed the importance of respecting the rights of Afghan women and strengthening their role and empowerment in various fields, she added.
She noted that Qatar organised, in partnership with Indonesia, an International Conference on Afghan Women's Education in the Indonesian city of Bali in December 2022, and that it will host the second edition of this conference from November 28-29, 2023, in order to highlight the latest developments regarding the educational situation, follow up the implementation of the recommendations issued by the first conference, mobilise support for the Afghan people, and to encourage international partners to find practical solutions to this issue.
