Qatar University (QU) held a ceremony to welcome its new president Dr Omar al-Ansari and to express gratitude and appreciation to its former president, Dr Hassan al-Derham.
A large number of deputy presidents, college deans, faculty members, administrators, and invitees attended the ceremony.
The ceremony included words of praise, appreciation and recognition for the great achievements that Dr al-Derham has made for the university during his presidency. It also highlighted the future vision expressed by Dr al-Ansari.
In his speech, Dr al-Ansari praised Dr al-Derham for his accomplishments in the development of academic programmes, university infrastructure, and effective and flexible handling of crises such as the blockade and the Covid-19 pandemic. He demonstrated his leadership skills in challenging circumstances while the university maintained its leading position and achieved significant progress in all fields.
Dr al-Ansari discussed his personal relationship and collaboration with Dr al-Derham during the previous presidency of QU under the leadership of Dr Abdullah Jumah al-Kubaisi. They also worked together with Dr Sheikha Abdulla al-Misnad during her tenure and contributed to QU's progress.
Dr al-Ansari spoke about his vision for the coming period, emphasising his commitment to continue the achievements made so far, especially since the university's work is institutional, collective, and unaffected by individuals except to the extent of directing the course of affairs.
“All previous presidents have contributed to this construction and have brought the university to the high level of development it has reached today in various fields.”
Dr al-Ansari clarified that several aspects will be focused on, including institutional effectiveness, quality of education, entrepreneurship and innovation, information technology, raising the university's ranking, and increasing its institutional credits.
Dr al-Ansari concluded his speech by expressing his commitment to the best interests of the university, its targeted audience, and serving the Qatari community. He emphasised that any changes to be implemented will primarily focus on improving academic work and enhancing performance based on well-studied foundations. These changes will be made after consulting with stakeholders and officials in different roles within the university.
Dr al-Ansari urged everyone to provide their feedback and opinion, recognising that the growth and development of the university depend on the collective efforts of all individuals. He expressed a strong sense of responsibility, and sought guidance and success from Allah.
Dr al-Derham thanked the attendees, foremost among them the new university president, Dr al-Ansari, for the tribute. He said the university is a large institution built on the efforts and work of everyone with a team spirit.
"Everyone has contributed to the achievements because Qatar University is deeply rooted in this society, and therefore it will continue to play a leading role in serving the community with strength," he said while thanking all the work teams, which contributed to the realisation of the accomplishments.
In his remarks, Dr al-Derham, expressed his gratitude to the attendees, with special mention of the new president, Dr al-Ansari, for the honour bestowed upon him.
