Representatives of Qatar, Somalia, Turkiye, the UAE, the UK and the US met in Doha on Monday for their third meeting to discuss the current situation in Somalia, particularly the security, political and humanitarian issues.
The partners affirmed their support for the Federal Government of Somalia to achieve security and stability in the current situation, and discuss ways to enhance confidence-building, capacity-building, and emphasise co-ordination of counterterrorism and international security assistance.
They welcomed the Somali government's commitment to strengthening its security sector capacity and preparations to assume responsibility from the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia by December 2024.
They discussed the importance of a security conference later this year to set out a pathway for a sustainable, affordable security architecture and stability post-2024.
The partners discussed the importance of ensuring stability and good governance in areas liberated from Al-Shabaab and committed to improve co-ordination of assistance in support of Somali-led stabilisation efforts. The government offered to share with the partners an approach to co-ordinate stabilisation efforts in Somalia.
HE the Minister of State for International Co-operation at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Lolwah bint Rashid AlKhater chaired Qatar's delegation to the meeting, with the participation of HE the Special Envoy of the Minister of Foreign Affairs for Counterterrorism and Mediation in Conflict Resolution Dr Mutlaq bin Majed al-Qahtani.
The meeting discussed the current situation in Somalia, especially security, political and humanitarian aspects, ways that would achieve stability in Somali territory and priorities and strengthen co-ordination, and proposals that would enhance confidence-building for the stability of Somalia, including the best ways to address the current situation in the country.
Qatar reaffirmed its support for Somalia and to continue providing the necessary support to contribute to laying the foundations for security, development and stability and building a state of institutions and the rule of law, which guarantees all rights of Somalis, and guaranteeing respect for the sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity of Somalia.
