The General Cultural Foundation (Katara) launched Sunday a variety of Arabic calligraphy activities as part of its annual program that includes a series of training courses, practical workshops, exhibitions and artistic forums.
Katara Director-General Dr. Khalid bin Ibrahim Al Sulaiti said the activities aim to preserve, bolster Arabic and Islamic calligraphy arts, as one of the most prominent elements of the Arab and Islamic identity and promoting them in Qatar and worldwide.
He added that Katara will enhance its role as an incubator to Arabic calligraphy and spread its culture among young people, in addition to attracting initiatives that seek to preserve and protect it.
Katara launched long-term work programs including training courses, practical workshops, forums, art exhibitions, specialized studies and media publications in a bid to promote this art's cultural, civilizational and aesthetic meanings worldwide, especially after it was included in the list of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), Al Sulaiti said.
Al Sulaiti added that Katara's annual program will also include a variety of practical workshops and training courses on various types and methods of Arabic calligraphy, according to the artistic levels and the targeted groups.
The trainees who successfully complete the courses will be awarded certificates to become professionals in Arabic calligraphy, Al Sulaiti said.
Katara will hold Arabic calligraphy exhibitions where a selection of the participants' distinguished paintings will go on display and be judged by a special panel, he added.
