The Qatar University (QU) Student Writer's Club recently held an awards ceremony to recognise the winners of a short story competition, as part of a 13-week course on creative writing presented by the English Language Programme at the US embassy in Qatar.
The event was graced by Megan Cassell, press attache at the US embassy, and Hanadi Damra, English Language and Education Outreach co-ordinator. The winners, Shahd Elamin, Fatima Ali and Mariam Sweify, were invited on stage to read excerpts from their stories.
The ceremony included a short speech about the club's activities by Mohamed Hosam al-Nahas, the club adviser and English lecturer at QU’s Foundation Programme. He called for students to submit written contributions to mark the first issue of the Student Writer’s Club bi-annual student magazine, ‘Quill and Ink.’
Previously, the club hosted American poet John Herlihy. Renowned short story writer George Saunders will join the next session.
