Guterres welcomed the agreement, praising the role of Egypt, Lebanon and the US in reaching it, calling on all parties to respect its provisions. The UN Secretary-General expressed his deep condolences to the families of the victims of the violence, noting that the hostilities led to unjustified human suffering.
He renewed the commitment of the UN to achieving a two-state solution on the basis of relevant UN resolutions, international law, and previous agreements, stressing the need to restore the political horizon, and stressed that only a sustainable negotiated political solution would lead to lasting peace, and put a final end to the cycles of conflict and current destructive violence.
