The Language Centre at Doha Institute for Graduate Studies (DI) celebrated the graduation of the 9th cohort of its Doha Residence Programme in Advanced Arabic and Social Studies during the spring term of 2023. Over 14 weeks, students from Germany, Norway, Iran and Sudan enjoyed intensive language classes in addition to diversified cultural activities such as visits to places including the National Museum of Qatar, Qatar National Library, cooking and calligraphy classes.
Through the language-partner initiative, students had the unique experience to engage with Arab students from the DI who speak different dialects and establish long-term cultural ties. Student, Jens Inden, said the Doha Residence Programme has a unique learning environment for learning the language, and the institute offers all the appropriate resources for students to spend an enjoyable time.
"I absorbed the Arabic language thanks to Arab students who come from all over the Arab world, in addition to my participation in daily language lessons, and participation in lectures, seminars and conferences offered weekly.”.
The Language Centre director Prof Alaa Elgibali explained that the Residence Programme is an important part of the DI's mission to establish, maintain, and nurture intellectual links and two-way dialogues between its students, faculty, and the international learning and research community.
Dr Fouad al-Qaisi, a lecturer, said the programme is witnessing the turnout of more heritage learners of Arabic, especially from the children of immigrant Arabs, and they are a category that needs special curricula that is offered.
