Icom Qatar has announced the formation of the new National Committee chaired by Sheikha Amna bint Abdulaziz al-Thani.
The formation of this council marks a significant step towards strengthening Qatar's position in the field of museums on an international scale.
The panel of board members will include Dr Fatema al-Sulaiti, who will sit as vice-chair of the Icom Qatar committee, Dr Hafiz Ali Abdulla, Sheikh Abdulaziz al-Thani, Jack Thomas Taylor, Zeina Arida, Aisha al-Attiya, Mariam al-Suwaidi (treasurer), Dr Rashid Malheya (secretary) and Nabilah Asarow (secretary).
Sheikha Amna praised all appointed members of the committee, saying: “I am pleased to congratulate all members on the formation of Icom Qatar, which will undoubtedly strengthen our role in the international museum community. Museums play a vital role in cultural, artistic, social, scientific and educational development, and we believe that Icom Qatar will contribute significantly to these areas.
"I see the Icom Qatar Council as a unique platform that offers opportunities for co-operation and exchange of experiences among members of the global network. Together, we can exchange ideas, expertise and knowledge that will promote the progression of museum practices.
"I look forward to working with all members of the Icom Qatar committee and wish them every success in their efforts to promote museums and cultural heritage in Qatar and beyond.”
Ahmad Musa al-Namla, CEO of Qatar Museums, the nation’s pre-eminent institution for art and culture, congratulated Icom on the formation of the new board and said: "I am thrilled to see the new formation of Icom Qatar and congratulate all appointed members in their roles. International Council of Museums (Icom) is a global organisation that aims to promote and protect the world's natural and cultural heritage. It has established various committees that work on specific areas of expertise, such as conservation, education and cultural tourism.
