The competitions of the 9th Edition of Senyar Festival were launched at Katara - the Cultural Village Beach Tuesday, featuring 58 teams in the completions.
There 697 participants include 64 from the GCC countries and 61 Qatar residents. They started at around 7am from Katara beach to the Sealine Beach.
The Hand-line Fishing (Haddaq) and Lifah (Pearl-Diving) competitions will start today and conclude Friday afternoon.
Jihad al-Jidah, member of the organising committee of the festival, said some changes were introduced in the current edition regarding the catch and the calculation of weight and points to save efforts and energy.
This edition is also offering more prizes, totalling QR2.2mn for the first 15 winners. Since the festival was halted for three years due to the Covid-19 pandemic, there is great enthusiasm for the ongoing edition, the official said.
Earlier, the organising committee held an introductory meeting where all the standards and conditions approved by the referees were discussed. The dhow should be wooden, licensed for navigation and equipped with the necessary gear.
Each participating team should include eight to 12 people with all submitting medical fitness certificates. The committee also introduced various new rules regarding the weight of each type of fish caught and how to calculate the total weight of each variety in addition to the rules of videography of each catch.
