The Primary Health Care Corporation’s (PHCC) Oral Health Promotion and Prevention Department, under the Preventive Health Directorate, organised a training workshop for dental staff as part of the impending launch of the Ejlal Home Oral Health Care Services Programme for the elderly.
The programme aims to assess the oral and dental health of the elderly, identify and refer cases who need dental treatment, and provide health education to elderly or their caregivers to prevent oral and dental diseases.
The full-day training workshop covered several topics, including the objectives, the phases of the service plan, schedule of visits and the roles and responsibilities of Ejlal service providers as well as refresher training on oral screening service.
Trainees also learned the Qatari etiquette, culture, and traditions of home visits, and how to manage challenges that may be encountered during home visits.
Trainees were educated on the age-related normal and abnormal oral and dental tissues changes, thus allowing them to perform accurate oral screening and to deliver oral health education for the elderly or their caregivers based on the oral health status. Some scientific topics were covered to understand the impact of oral health on elderly patients’ quality of life, and the connection between oral and dental health and the various body diseases.
The trainees also learned how to refer cases in need of treatment on priority basis. This was followed by a questions and answers session.
