The Indonesian embassy in Doha held a 'Silaturrahim Night' for the Indonesian community in Qatar.
Some 800-900 people turned up at the Indonesian ambassador's residence in Doha on April 22. Those who came were Indonesian citizens from various backgrounds, from hospitality workers and students to expatriates working in the oil and gas sector in Qatar.
The community members were enthusiastic about the event as this was the first big gathering held at the ambassador's residence after the Covid-19 pandemic.
Apart from having friendly chitchat with their fellow Indonesians, those who came also had the opportunity to enjoy traditional Indonesian delicacies served by the embassy, such as pempek, green bananas, rujak, bakso and so on.
Ambassador Ridwan Hassan, in his remarks, expressed gratitude and pride for the Indonesian diaspora in Qatar.
The contribution of the diaspora in the success of Indonesia's diplomacy in Qatar is not small. This year, for example, is the Qatar-Indonesia Year of Culture and the Indonesian diaspora is widely involved in promoting Indonesia in this country.
Various activities such as dance, culinary and sports events, are being conducted, with the support of the Indonesian diaspora, to celebrate Qatar-Indonesia 2023 Year of Culture.
The Indonesian envoy also invited Indonesian citizens in Qatar to stay in harmony and work together to succeed with regard to the big agendas going forward, one of which is the 2024 Indonesian election, which will also be held overseas, including in Qatar.
Currently, there are around 20,000 Indonesian citizens in Qatar, a press statement notes.
