Trainer Alban de Mieulle, jockey Soufiane Saadi and the colours of Wathnan Racing combined superbly as Band Width produced a fine performance to win the End Of Season Cup in Qatar Racing & Equestrian Club’s final 52nd Race Meeting of 2022-23 season at the Al Rayyan Racecourse yesterday.
The four-year-old won the 1,600m contest for three-year-old+ Thoroughbreds by a length and a half, wrapping up the meeting and the season with a double for de Mieulle and a treble for Saadi. Abdulla Rashid al-Kubaisi, QREC Racing Manager, crowned the winners.
Earlier, Wathnan Racing’s Jabalah ran out a ready winner of the Al Utouriya Cup. The seven-year-old ran on strongly inside the straight, winning the 1600m contest for four-year-old+ Purebred Arabians, with five and a half lengths to spare at the line for de Mieulle and under Saadi. Abdulaziz Jassim al-Boenain, Al Uqda Complex Manager, presented the trophies to the winners.
In the race for Al Karana Cup, Al Jeryan Stud’s homebred AJS Lattam remained unbeaten on second career start. The trainer-jockey combination of M H K al-Attiyah and Szczepan Mazur teamed up with the black colt to win the 1,400m Novice Plate for three-year-old Purebred Arabians, by one length and a half and secure a double of their own on the day.
The Sheikh Mohamed bin Salman al-Thani-owned Uffington was rewarded for a string of fine efforts as he got off the mark in the 2000m Handicap (0-90) for three-year-old Thoroughbreds under Alberto Sanna. The Gassim Ghazali-saddled gelding did well enough to win by three lengths, completing a double on the day for his trainer.
Trainer Saeed al-Shafi got his name on the scoresheet, as Al Ezz Stud’s Toyota came two lengths and three quarters clear in the 2,000m Handicap (0-85) for four-year-old+ Local Thoroughbreds, giving jockey Al Moatasem al-Balushi a second winner on the day.
Al Shaqab Racing’s homebred Felowah recorded her second straight win with a bang as the Eric Lemartinel-trained four-year-old bay filly bolted up in the 1,600m Graduation Plate for four-year-old Purebred Arabians under jockey Faleh Bughanaim, scoring impressively by five lengths.
The Abdulatif Hussain al-Emadi-owned Kaliysta shed her maiden tag in the 1,400m Handicap (55-75) for three-year-old+ Thoroughbreds. The Bader al-Balushi-trained four-year-old filly scored by three quarters of a length under jockey al-Balushi.
Al Ghazali Stud’s Seulomonde cruised to a comfortable two and a half length win in the 1600m Novice for three-year-old + Thoroughbreds. The Gassim Ghazali-trained five-year-old gelding was ridden to end his 2022/24 campaign strongly by Saadi.
Kicking off the finale of the season, trainer M H K al-Attiyah was the first in the winners’ enclosure after Al Jeryan Stud’s homebred AJS Haizum came out on top by a quarter of a length under jockey Szczepan Mazur in the 1,600m Maiden for 4-6-year-old Local Purebred Arabians.
