The Public Works Authority (Ashghal) recently completed development works on a vital part of Al Wukair Road, starting from its intersection with Sheikh Abdulrahman Bin Jasim Al Thani Street and extending 2km towards Al Mashaf, in addition to converting its two roundabouts into signal-controlled intersections, as part of the Road Improvement Project in the South of Greater Doha - Phase 2.

The works implemented on this part of Al Wukair Road are in addition to the development of 12km of roads in the area, whose completion was announced by the authority in October 2022. This included developing part of Al Wukair Road located to the west of Al Janoub Stadium and parts of the streets perpendicular to it, in addition to the construction of eight intersections. The development works contributed to increasing the road capacity and regulating traffic flow in the area, Ashghal said in a press statement.

Muneera al-Mohannadi, project engineer in the Doha City Projects Section at Ashghal's Roads Projects Department, stressed the importance of the development works and their location, particularly as Al Wukair Road is used by many vehicles daily and serves a number of health facilities - such as Al Wakra Hospital and Al Wakra Health Centre, commercial centres, sport facilities such as Al Janoub Stadium and other service facilities and educational institutions.

Al-Mohannadi confirmed that the development works contributed to raising the capacity of the road and thus enhancing traffic flow in this vital area, in addition to enhancing traffic safety.

The works included developing part of Al Wukair Road with two main lanes, starting from its intersection with Sheikh Abdulrahman bin Jasim Al Thani Street and extending 2 km towards Al Mashaf, in addition to developing a 4km-long service road.

The two existing roundabouts, known as the Health Centre Roundabout and Al Wakra Hospital Roundabout, were converted into two signal-controlled intersections, and multiple lanes were provided at the two intersections, which contributed to improving traffic flow in this specific area. This is in addition to developing lighting systems and installing 110 street lighting poles, as well as providing 4km of pedestrian paths.

As for infrastructure works, they included upgrading 3km of the TSE (treated sewage effluent) network and 5km of the surface water and stormwater drainage network, in addition to upgrading and protecting the electricity and communications lines.

The Public Works Authority is currently implementing construction works to develop sewage infrastructure for this area near Al Wukair Road, as part of the design and build project of Drainage Networks Branches. Excavation work is currently under way for 10 shafts within Al Wukair Road and Al Jamia Street. These works are scheduled to be completed in the second quarter of 2024.
  • Main development works on Al Wukair Road

Ashghal had announced in October 2022 the completion of the main upgrade works on Al Wukair Road and some streets in the Al Wukair and Al Mashaf areas, with a total length of 12km, as part of the Interim Road Improvements in Doha South Project, Phase 1.

The development works involved Al Wukair Road, located to the west of Al Janoub Stadium, and part of Al Ghariya Street at its intersection with Al Wukair Road, in addition to developing Al Meshaf Street and Street No. 300, which is perpendicular to it.

The works also included upgrading eight intersections, including the construction of seven new signal-controlled junctions and converting an existing roundabout into a signal-controlled intersection in order to regulate traffic and enhance road safety. This is in addition to constructing Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), developing lighting systems, installing 445 street lighting poles, and providing 380 parking bays.

Sidewalks and road signs were also provided as part of the project.

Infrastructure works within the project involved upgrading the foul sewer network (3km), TSE irrigation lines (6.5km) and surface water and storm water drainage pipes (19km).
