The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) has called for an immediate cessation of hostilities between the warring parties in Sudan and a return to negotiations.
In a statement following a meeting for IGAD in Nairobi on Sunday, the Kenyan Presidency said that the Authority decided to send the presidents of Kenya, South Sudan, and Djibouti as soon as possible to conduct a reconciliation between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces.
According to the statement, IGAD urged for decisive actions on the crisis in Sudan, pointing out that stability in Sudan is key to the social and economic stability of the region and that the conflict undermines the peace progress achieved over the last four months.
The IGAD move comes amid growing Arab and international concern about the situation in Sudan and calls for calm and restraint, as the United Nations, the Arab League, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, the United States, Russia, and the European Union called for an end to the fighting in the country.
