Al Wakra Yard for selling local agriculture products has been seeing a considerable increase in the turnout of customers during its operation on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 8pm until 11pm during the holy month of Ramadan, local Arabic daily Arrayah reported.
The other yards are at Al Sheehaniya, Al Shamal and Al Khor and Al Thakhira. All the four function under the Ministry of Municipality. A number of shoppers at Al Wakra Yard told the daily that the products are good quality, and the prices are almost 40% less than retail outlets.
Local vegetables are preferred by many Qataris and expatriates due to the quality, freshness and reasonable prices.
Khalil al-Mudahka, a resident of Al Wakra City, said he always goes to Al Wakra Yard for shopping due to the proximity and the fact that Qatari products have proven to be of high quality, especially during the peak of the local agriculture season when prices drop considerably and quality become even better.
Mohamed Ibrahim, another Al Wakra resident, said that the working hours of the yard during Ramadan are most convenient for shoppers. The vegetables sold at the yard are fresh and have a good lifespan when kept at home because they come directly from the farm to the consumer, unlike those imported.
Yousef al-Ibrahim, a consumer, described himself as a regular visitor of the yard, and rates the place excellent. The prices saw a considerable drop recently, with a box of tomatoes sold for QR5, cucumber at QR10, zucchini QR10, lettuce QR10, potatoes QR10, and eggplants QR10.
