Some 201 livestock owners have registered for the joint national initiative to encourage local meat production for Ramadan this year, with the number of livestock heads registered and ready for supply amounting to 39,500 head, according to Abdulaziz al-Ziyara, director of the animal resources department at the Ministry of Municipality.
The official told local Arabic daily Arrayah that he expected that around 65-70% of the registered sheep will be supplied.
Al-Ziraya noted that this initiative is aimed at raising the rate of self-sufficiency in red meat production and maintain an adequate strategic stock in the country.
Simultaneously, it is aimed at helping livestock owners earn a good income and profit to encourage them to increase their flock and keep excellent breeds.
Al-Ziyara said it is estimated that the income of the participants has multiplied considerably since 2018, with the total amount only QR4mn then compared to the current amount spent in this initiative, which is some QR37mn.
He noted that the sales of individual livestock owners have increased from around QR60,000 in 2018 to around QR219,000 on an average this season.
