The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MoECC) organised a clean-up campaign at Sealine Beach in co-ordination with Khalid Zaki, environment and diving ambassador of the Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI), and in co-operation with The Hamilton International School, Doha.
The campaign was aimed at raising community awareness in schools about the importance of preserving the local environment and introducing students to the negative impact the practice of dumping waste at beaches and public places has on living organisms, the MoECC said in a statement.
A large amount of waste was collected from the beach and transported to the designated places for disposal.
The participants did all that was necessary to restore the beach to its normal state.
The campaign stems from the belief of the ministry in the importance of preserving beaches and coastal areas, as well as the need to involve school students in cleaning campaigns for them to become an effective component within the local community to preserve the environment.
Students participating in the initiative said that they gained valuable experience as well as knowledge on different ways to preserve the environment.
They also learned during the campaign about industrial materials that pollute the environment and their harmful impact on plants and animals.
They thanked and appreciated the MoECC for its interest in involving students in such campaigns and their impact on raising community awareness of the local environment.
