Following the launch of the One Tide Industry Coalition by the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy (SC) and the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MoECC), the body held its first workshop at Al Thumama Stadium recently.
The event was aimed at translating the endorsements and commitments made at the launch in December 2022 – during the FIFA World Cup – into a tangible action plan towards the goal of plastic diversion from landfill and a circular economy in Qatar.
Attendees, who included representatives of local, regional and global organisations, learned more on recycling, renewable materials and diverting waste from landfill during presentations from the SC, MoECC and coalition members.
A summary of best practices and group workshops were also held.
The one-day workshop proposed a number of solutions to address challenges related to plastic waste management.
By the end of the session, a high-level project plan was implemented to encourage stakeholders to adopt sustainable consumption and production practices.
“The coalition brings together experts from across the field of sustainability and is an example of the strong legacy that Qatar 2022 will have in this area,” said SC sustainability executive director Bodour al-Meer. “Our meeting strengthened this network and looked at ways we can utilise a circular economy.”
“We are committed to addressing the impact of climate change on Qatar in light of the urban, economic and social progress being witnessed by our country,” said MoECC head of sustainable practices Mohamed al-Badr. “Circular economies enable us to conserve resources and preserve our environment for future generations.”
The One Tide Industry Coalition aims to leverage Qatar’s successful hosting of the FIFA World Cup to promote awareness and positive environmental actions to support the local economy.
Its members include Seashore, Averda, Baladna, Al Rayyan Water, Twyla, Modern Cleaning and Trading MCC, APEX Waste Management, the Coca-Cola Company – Al Ahlia Beverages, Doha Plastics, Jama Plastics, Polytech Plastics, UFPP Plastic, Al Meera, Carrefour, Lulu, P&G, Pepsi, Unilever, and Nestle Middle East FZE.
Launched by the SC in March 2022 and delivered by Seven Clean Seas, One Tide is a programme that raises awareness and engagement on the issue of plastic pollution in Qatar.
