Dr Hanadi al-Hamad, Qatar’s National Health Strategy Lead for Healthy Ageing and chairperson for the Department of Geriatrics and Long-Term Care at Hamad Medical Corporation, has been appointed to serve as a member of the World Health Organisation (WHO) Technical Advisory Group tasked with integrating health and care workforces to establish better care networks for ageing populations.
WHO is in the process of developing global policy options to support its member states, including Qatar, to progressively integrate their health and care workforces. The goal is to develop the first global policy resource with an explicit focus on care workers as part of integrated person-centred health services and strengthened primary health care systems.
The WHO Technical Advisory Group on integrating the health and care workforces will act in an advisory capacity to the WHO through the Department of Health Workforce, towards the development of appropriate policy options. The group is tasked with defining the key issues that care workers face in the context of integrating the health and social care workforce to strengthen primary care. They will also capture the diversity of approaches and respective challenges in ensuring the quality and sustainability of the health and care workforce. And finally, they will provide evidence informed policy options to Member States on key considerations for integrating the health and care workforces in a variety of country contexts.
Dr al-Hamad, also the medical director of Rumailah Hospital and Qatar Rehabilitation Institute, has established a strong and successful working relationship with the WHO, including acting in an advisory capacity for the safety and care of older persons during the Covid-19 pandemic. The invitation is for a two-year appointment as a member of the WHO Technical Advisory Group on integrating health and care workforces.
