Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Sudan Ali Al-Sadiq Ali said that the State of Qatar's distinguished organisation in hosting the 5th United Nations Conference on the Least Developed Countries (LDC5) indicates its outstanding experience in hosting such important international events, as well as its interest in the Sustainable Development Goals and the enhancement of the multilateral international action to confront the economic, social and environmental challenges facing the least developed countries under the umbrella of the United Nations, stressing that the success of the State of Qatar in organising this conference clearly contributed to its success.
In an exclusive statement to Qatar News Agency (QNA), the Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs of Sudan said that the State of Qatar has been achieving wide success in hosting major international events, as this was manifested in organizing the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, noting that this conference constitutes an appreciable addition to the achievements made by the State of Qatar in organising such events. He pointed out that the conference witnessed wide participation and serious discussions that will have subsequent results.
The Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs of Sudan added that the success of Qatar in this conference is a success for all and a source of great pride, wishing the State of Qatar more success, progress and prosperity.
Regarding bilateral relations between Sudan and Qatar, he affirmed that the relations between the two brotherly countries are witnessing a remarkable development, expressing aspiration that the coming period will witness more progress and joint cooperation. He also highly valued Qatar's continuous support to Sudan in the development and humanitarian fields, which highly appreciated by the Sudanese government and people, praising the investments of the State of Qatar in Sudan in various sectors.
He underlined that Sudan seeks to move from the group of least developed countries to the ranks of middle-income countries by investing in its natural resources and working to achieve sustainable development goals that aim to reduce poverty and achieve sustainable development in all economic, social and environmental aspects through a national plan aimed at activating the role of the private sector, attracting foreign investments and working with regional and international development partners in all fields so that this will be reflected in the lives of citizens throughout Sudan.
The Sudanese Acting Minister stressed that the member states of the Group of Least Developed Countries are working through this conference to unify their efforts and work with partners under the umbrella of the United Nations in order to implement the Doha Programme of Action during the next decade, pointing out that the negative effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Russian-Ukrainian war and the burden of debts still cast a heavy shadow over Sudan and impede development efforts in it. He stressed on the need for joint cooperation between the countries of the North and the South without looking at the differences, referring in this regard to the geographical location of Sudan and its natural and agricultural resources, which can contribute to bridging the food gap which many countries in the world suffer from. The availability of such resources is an incentive for countries to strengthen their efforts to exit the list of least developed countries with the help of the international community and the United Nations, he added.
The Sudanese Acting Minister noted that Sudan's participation in this conference comes by virtue of its presence in the list of the Least Developed Countries, as it faces the same challenges and issues facing these countries, referring to the discussion of the challenges facing development efforts and ways of establishing partnerships to overcome them. He also noted that proposed solutions were also listened to and the best practices and experiences of countries in overcoming these obstacles were reviewed during the conference.
Concluding his statement to QNA, the Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs of Sudan affirmed that efforts are underway to form a civilian government in Sudan that will lead the country to complete the democratic transition, towards the formation of an elected government.
