Qatar has renewed its deep dissatisfaction and strong condemnation of the recent incidents of burning the copies of the Holy Qur'an in some Western countries, as well as all hate speech and acts of intolerance that would fuel feelings of hostility and violence against others, stressing what the High Commissioner for Human Rights said about the seriousness of these deliberate provocations.
Qatar also called on the governments of the concerned countries to take effective measures to prevent their recurrence, and to hold those responsible accountable, especially since these actions deliberately provoke Muslims' feelings, disrespect their sanctities, and incite violence against them. This came in the statement delivered by HE the Permanent Representative of Qatar to the UN in Geneva Dr Hind Abdulrahman al-Muftah, during her participation in the general debate on the oral update of the High Commissioner for Human Rights within the framework of the 52nd session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva.
She referred to the proceeding of the 5th UN Conference of the Least Developed Countries (LDC5), which is successfully taking place in Doha, expressing her hope that the period following the conference will witness directing efforts towards implementing the Doha Programme of Action (DPoA) for the Decade 2022-2031, in a way that attends to the aspirations of LDCs and meets their needs and priorities towards achieving development.
She noted Qatar's announcement of providing $60mn to support the implementation of the activities of the DPoA and to build the resilience of these countries. HE Dr al-Muftah pointed to the opening of the UN House in Doha, which includes representative offices of a number of international organisations and UN agencies, which will enhance the ability of Qatar to implement its regional and international activities and programmes.
She called on the international community to continue to assist and protect the Syrian people, and to ensure accountability for those responsible for the violations and crimes committed against them. Furthermore, she expressed Qatar's strong condemnation of the increase in crimes and grave violations committed by the Israeli forces and extremist Israeli settlers against the brotherly Palestinian people, stressing the need for the international community to shoulder its responsibilities by taking the necessary measures to expand and activate protection and accountability mechanisms for Israeli officials, and to provide protection for the Palestinians and ensure their rights.
