The Local Organising Committee (LOC) for the upcoming AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2023 has issued Resolution No. (1) for 2023, appointing Jassim Abdulaziz al-Jassim as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the tournament.
The decision represents a significant step in preparing to host the AFC Asian Cup in the State of Qatar.
The Asian Football Confederation’s (AFC) Executive Committee had previously selected the Qatar Football Association (QFA) to host the 2023 AFC Asian Cup.
This will be the third time that the State of Qatar will host the tournament, following the 1988 and 2011 editions. The Qatar national team is also the reigning champions after winning the 2019 AFC Asian Cup.
In late February, the QFA Executive Office issued a decision to form the LOC for the 2023 AFC Asian Cup, headed by HE QFA President Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa bin Ahmed al-Thani and vice-chairman Jassim Rashid al-Buainain. The committee included the membership of Ahmed Abdulaziz al-Buainain, Ibrahim Khalil al-Muhannadi, Hani Talib Ballan, Mansour Mohamed al-Ansari, Ghanem Ali al-Kuwari, Mohamed al-Suwaidi, and a representative of the Ministry of Interior.
It also appointed QFA Secretary-General Mansour Mohamed al-Ansari as the general manager of the tournament, in addition to his membership in the LOC.
Japan holds the record for winning the Asian Cup four times, followed by Saudi Arabia and Iran with three times.
This will be the second biggest football tournament to be held in Qatar after the hugely successful edition of the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar that was staged in November and December last year.
