President of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) Lachezara Stoeva affirmed the importance of full implementation of the Doha Programme of Action and immediate and serious action to assist the least developed countries (LDC) and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030.
During her speech in the opening session of the 5th UN Conference on the Least Developed Countries (LDC5), which kicked off Sunday in Doha, Lachezara Stoeva stressed that helping the least developed countries is a shared international responsibility, highlighting the necessity to strengthen the development efforts of LDC, which posses enormous potential in terms of human, cultural and natural sources. She pointed out that what these countries are in need of is sustainable economic growth, so that everyone can live in peace and prosperity.
Lachezara Stoeva emphasized the speed and importance of the commitment of countries, developed partners and governments to international agreements, in order to achieve the SDGs by 2030 at all levels, calling for the need for rapid action to address these crises and make efforts in the long term to accelerate recovery, as millions of youth and populations in LDC can have this as a source and engine for transformative sustainable development.
She also explained that a large number of LDC are close to no longer being LDC, pointing out that this exit must be irreversible and sustainable, and that it requires the support of the international community. She affirmed that the UN Economic and Social Council will play a significant role in this regard.
President of the United Nations Economic and Social Council Lachezara Stoeva concluded her speech by saying that LDC face the risks of high prices as well as restrictions related to fuel and food, noting that the difficult financial conditions have limited the capabilities of these countries to invest in sustainable development and address the effects of climate change.
In this context, she suggested providing appropriate funding for the least developed countries, by launching a debt relief programme and increasing financial flows for infrastructure to enhance human development and the ability of these countries to face shocks and disasters.
